The View South from My Apartment

I took this picture from my balcony, looking south along LaSalle Street in Chicago, to record that the new highrise apartment building south of me has been completed. We already knew when its construction started last year that it was not going to be vey high, and certainly wouldn't affect my unobstructed view of downtown Chicago.

Just because I can, I've added at right an aerial view (courtesy of Google maps) of the area of my picture at left. You can see that not much had changed in the block south of my former apartment building since 1975.

Another change is that the liquor store on the corner of North and LaSalle is being torn down. Rumor has it that a Burger King is going up there.

The View Southwest from My Apartment

One Saturday, I was at home and the forecast was for storms later in the day, so I went and did my jogging early in the afternoon. I usually go about five miles, and take about 45 minutes to get back to the apartment. Sure enough, as I was jogging, it was rapidly clouding up, and by the time I got back upstairs things were pretty threatening.

Over the next hour, I could see storms developing out west. One of the neat things about being on the south end of my building and being 36 floors up is that I have not only great views of downtown, but also unobstructed views to the west. Since Chicago weather almost always comes from that direction, the best weather forecast I can get is to look out one of my western-facing windows.

Or I can go out on my balcony, which is what I did to get the picture at left. You can see that the rain is almost here, and I stayed outside until it began. At left, you can see the Sears Tower and some of the other skyscrapers in the west side of downtown, and right in the center of the picture you can see the new building that is the headquarters of Montgomery Ward.
