A Weekend Trip to Austin

On Friday the 11th, Fred and I drove down to Austin to spend the weekend and to meet Frank and Joe who were to come up from the farm in Leakey. We drove down after work and got a room at the Motel 6 north of Austin. Frank and Joe met us there, and Friday night we went out. On Saturday, we went to the TGRA Rodeo in Austin. I didn't take any pictures there, as they would have been repetitive with the ones I took in Dallas two years ago. At the rodeo, we ran into Richard Boyd, from Kansas City, who is now embroidering and selling all kind of T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets with gay and rodeo themes. I bought one to put away for Larry's birthday gift next year. That evening, we ate at El Torito's, and then went out to the new gay C&W bar and also to the Chain Drive.

On Sunday, we had breakfast at an IHOP downtown and then drove out west of Austin to the Living Desert Cactus Ranch.

This small store along Texas Highway 71 has long been a favorite of Frank and Joe when they are in town- a place where they can usually find some interesting plants to take back down to Leakey.

The store itself is in an old country building, and is itself very picturesque. That's why I used it as the backdrop for the tripod picture of the four of us above. I also took a couple of other pictures while we were out here.

At right is Frank loading some cactus into his truck; there was quite a variety here, as well as baskets, pots and other plants. Both Fred and Frank found a number of specimens they could not resist.

I wanted a nice portrait photograph of Frank and Joe, and here it is:

Since the first time I met Frank and Joe in 1992, Fred and I have seen them at least three or four times- a lot for guys that live so far away. Fred and Frank and Joe go a long way back and, as has been mentioned elsewhere, are the best of friends. While they love living where they do, they also like to get away from the farm occasionally, and I know Fred likes to see them as much as he can. They are both genuinely good people.
