Midwest Trip: Day Six

We Drive to Peru, Illinois

Our Plans Change

Fred and I had a nice breakfast at the Quality Inn, and Guy came over in late morning. It was raining, pretty steadily, and it was apparent that our plans to go up to Door County were not going to work out. Fred and I had done some investigating on the Internet, and we found that today was supposed to be raining all day pretty much all over the northern midwest. But tomorrow was supposed to be a very nice day from northern Illinois all the way south. Fred had been investigating Starved Rock State Park near Peru, Illinois, for some time, and wanted to stop there and do some hiking. So much as we might have liked to stay around and perhaps go with Guy to Door County tomorrow, we decided that we would just spend some time with Guy today and then, in the afternoon, begin our drive south. We hoped to find a place to stay near Starved Rock State Park so that if the weather cooperated we could get an early start on Wednesday.

Guy thought that our plan was the best thing under the circumstances; he had some appointments and stuff on Wednesday anyway; today would have been his only day to go to Door County. So, we stayed with Guy through lunch and spent some time just relaxing with him in the rectory before we started out on our drive south about three in the afternoon.

We started out by taking I-43 back south to Milwaukee, retracing our path from yesterday. But at Milwaukee, we stayed on I-43 instead of heading down I-94 back to Chicago. I-43 angles off to the southwest through Wisconsin.

I-43 took us through Beloit, Wisconsin and to a hook-up with I-39 south. I-39 went straight south through Illnois to arrive in the LaSalle/Peru area, which is at the intersection of I-39 and I-80.

Just before we left Green Bay, I made a reservation at the Super 8 Motel northwest of Peru. To get to it, we had to turn west on I-80 and go two exits.

We found the Super 8 Motel with no problem, got checked in, and then drove a mile to a local restaurant that had been recommended by the desk clerk. It was one of those friendly non-chain affairs, with a big menu, so we each found something to our liking.

Then it was back to the motel and some planning for tomorrow.
