San Antonio Birthdays: Ron and Karl

As we try to do each year, we have returned to San Antonio two weeks after Thanksgiving to help celebrate Ron Ruckman's and Karl Gleim's birthdays, which occur within days of each other. As it turned out, this also gave us the opportunity to attend Prudence's yearly Christmas celebration at the gallery- her "Christmas Bubbly Afternoon".

Getting to the Ruckman's House in San Antonio

You have probably seen an album page where we visit San Antonio, but in case you haven't, I want to show you the route to San Antonio from Dallas and where Prudence and Ron and Guy are located.

On the left-hand map below, you can see the normal route from Dallas down to San Antonio. Not much explanation is necessary; sometimes we take the bypass around Austin, but most times we don't, and the trip to the San Pedro exit in San Antonio is usually four hours plus.

We head north on San Pedro Avenue a couple of miles and then either hang a left on Ashby and a right on Breeden or just a left on French to get to the Ruckmans' house on the northeast corner of Breeden and French.

In case you have not seen them, I have put below first an aerial view of the Ruckmans' house (it is the house on the corner and the garage/apartment building north of it where Guy lives) and a front view of the house (taken in 2010).

Ron and Karl's Birthdays

The two guys have their birthdays only a few days apart, so they are usually celebrated the same weekend. This year, they were celebrated on Friday, December 10th.

Here are Ron, Karl, and all their birthday guests at the Open Table Restaurant.

Friday is the day that the gallery hosts the weekly Winedown event in the very early evening. As usual, I spent most of the day at the gallery helping Prudence. Ron and Fred dropped in as well. I happened to get a good picture of Fred with a painting he liked.

The Winedown event starts at six and usually lasts for a little over an hour. This evening, Prudence and Nancy had made reservations at the Open Table Restaurant, a ways up the street from her gallery, to celebrate Ron and Karl's birthdays, and she invited a few of her close friends, most of whom had attended the Friday Winedown.

The guys usually celebrate their birthdays at the same dinner, although sometimes Nancy organizes a different dinner for Karl. But this year, they were both recognized at the same time.

Christmas Bubbly Afternoon

The very next day, on Saturday the 11th, Prudence had her yearly Christmas Celebration at the gallery.

At left is the event announcement that we did for her gallery website. Prudence does this event yearly, and it is always a lot of fun to attend.

I took some candid pictures this afternoon, but let's begin with the movie I made.

(Mouseover Image if Video Controls Not Visible)

This movie is a bit odd, because I didn't realize I was holding the phone all wrong at the beginning. Actually, I don't know what I was thinking, rotating the phone a few seconds into the video.

Rather than have you watch 99% of the video with your head tilted sideways so that things are right side up, I decided to rotate the video so that only the first few seconds- which is just the outside shot of the gallery- are whopperjawed.

So don't worry that there is something wrong with your computer or phone, the movie that you can use the player at left to watch will right itself just ten seconds in, and from there on you'll be fine. Enjoy walking through Art Gallery Prudencia during "Christmas Bubbly Afternoon".

As for the still pictures, there are a couple at left and right and the rest are in the slideshow below. To look at the pictures in the slideshow, just click on the image below to open the show. Then you can use the little arrows in the lower corners of each picture to move from one to the next. You can use the index numbers in the upper left of each picture to track your progress through the show.

We left for home on Monday morning, after another very enjoyable trip down to see our friends in San Antonio. And, once again, we must thank Prudence for all her hospitality!
