My 36th Birthday "Party"

My birthday was actually on Tuesday the 23rd, but Dennis happened to be in Chicago the weekend before, and I had a class to do the next week in Canada (where they don't celebrate Thanksgiving), so I would be gone from Chicago. One of the nice things about Dennis is that he is very thoughtful, and remembers special days. So he surprised me on Saturday evening with a birthday cake.

It was just the two of us this evening. We'd been out for dinner, but Dennis had brought the cake over earlier in the day. It was actually quite a surprise. He took this picture of me blowing out the candles on the cake. (When I saw it later, it occurred to me that I really should try to do something about my glasses; perhaps I should try the new contact lenses that a lot of people have. I know they take a great deal of care, and are quite expensive, but I think I would look better without them.

I have enjoyed knowing Dennis this year- very much. If he didn't live in Springfield, I suspect that we might have decided to move in together, but as it was his job and my own excessive travel kept us from considering that very seriously.

So I was saddened today, when Dennis told me that he would be moving shortly. For a long time, Dennis has wanted to leave Springfield- either to move to Chicago or somewhere else. But a lot depended on getting a new job.

Just a week before my birthday, he found a position with the State of Georgia that would mean he would be moving to Savannah, Georgia. The opportunity was a good one, and he decided that he was going to make the move. His new job was to start the first of December, so this was one of the last times that I saw him in Chicago.

As it turned out, the two pictures I took of Dennis this evening were the last I would have of him from Chicago or Springfield:

When Dennis left on Sunday, he suggested that if he were settled in Savannah by Christmastime, that if I went home for the Holiday as I planned to do that I should come down to Savannah to see him there. So I asked him to write or call if he were settled enough for company by the week after Christmas and I would indeed come down. (As it turned out, he was and I did.)
