Our Florida Trip:
Getting to Fort Lauderdale

On Saturday morning, Fred and I took my car out to the airport, left it in long-term parking, and headed over to the American Airlines terminal for our flight to Fort Lauderdale.

The flight itself was as pleasant as usual, which is not quite so pleasant as it was before 9/11. But we like flying into and out of the Fort Lauderdale airport; everyone there seems so civilized about things.

As we usually do, we rented a car- this time a bright yellow Neon from one of the discount places near the airport. Getting to the condo is easy, as you can see on the map at left. All we have to do is head up Federal Highway (US 1) from the airport, go through the Kinney Tunnel, and hang a right on Broward Blvd. This takes us over to SE 7th Ave. which we take back south across Las Olas to SE 4th St. We turn left, go two blocks, and the condo is right there.

When we pull into the parking lot, my space is around to the right (in the picture at left of Fred walking from the car towards Riverview Gardens.

My actual unit is on the second floor, right behind the stairway that you see at the near corner of the building. The front door to my unit, which is the corner one, is the double glass door that you see just to the right of the stairway on the second floor. Actually, I replaced the doors and windows a few years ago, getting rid of the jalousie windows, which were never particularly air-tight, with hurricane glass. Most people are doing the same thing over time, so the appearance of the building is slowly changing.

I like my location, because I can look out the living room window at the river; very few other units, except for those around by the river itself, can see it from their living rooms.

You can see the unit a bit better in a photo that Fred took while we were here. He was standing on the stairway at the other corner of this side of the building and he looked back north along the outside walkway. You can see my double door (I have a larger one since there used to be a breezeway that led to the interior courtyard and an interior walkway. That was closed off many years ago, and so the two one bedroom units at this corner of the building became larger, and the previous owner used that side for the front door. I have another door around the far side of the building, but I only rarely use it. You can see all this in Fred's picture here.

One of the rituals we have when we come down to Florida is have our first frozen drink down by the dock on the first night we are here. So after we got settled and had a little bike ride, we made drinks and relaxed down at the Riverview Gardens dock- watching the Saturday evening boat traffic on the river. It was a really nice ending to a day of travel.
