Rudolf Lowenstein Visits Dallas

Rudolf Lowenstein in My Study

Rudolf Lowenstein is a Franciscan Friar who works out of a monastery in London. Almost ten years ago, now, when Fred first put up a home page of his own on the Web, it featured his cats prominently, as well as his interests in gardening an horticulture. As luck would have it, those interests precisely coincided with Rudolf's, and he had been doing some Internet searches using those topics as keywords and he ran across Fred's home page. He emailed Fred, and they began to swap stories about cats and plants. From Fred, Rudolf found out about my own page, and the connection between Fred and I, and so he became one of my email pen pals as well.

We corresponded by email quite frequently, swapping jokes and short notes. We learned that Rudolf's father lived for the most part in the United States, and that he had been the financial advisor for the Rolling Stones almost since their first days. About six years ago (you can work back through this album to find out just when) Rudolf made a two-week trip to the United States to visit his father and a number of other friends across the country, and one of the stops he made was here in Dallas.

He visited again a couple of years later and, as a thank-you gift for the first two visits, sent Fred and I two tickets to the Rolling Stones' appearance in Houston a couple of years ago (certainly a unique thank-you gift in my experience, and an extremely entertaining one as well). This particular occasion is Rudolf's third time visiting us, but it was unfortunately his shortest, as he stayed just three days.

As we have usually done, we took him out to eat and to a few movies, and engaged in a lot of interesting conversation. On the occasion when the three pictures below were taken, we took Rudolf to meet some of our other friends for breakfast on Sunday.

Rudolf's visit was all too short this time, and by Monday morning he was on a plane to his next stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
