A Trip to Fort Lauderdale

I flew down to Fort Lauderdale for another week-long visit on Tuesday, July 24th, timing my visit to span another weekend that Fred would be at his mother's in DeLeon. Greg was off on a cruise, so I had to drive myself to the airport and leave my car in the Park Express lot off the airport. The flight flight down was pleasant and uneventful, and I arrived late in the afternoon on Tuesday. I usually run these trips from a Tuesday to a following Wednesday, so I took the city bus into town and walked the five blocks to the condo. All was in order when I arrived. I didn't do much that night except fix some dinner and futz around in the condo.

I usually rode my bike every day (when we weren't having showers), with the destination being either Hillsboro Inlet (25 miles round trip), Pompano Beach (20 miles round-trip) or Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (15 miles round-trip). I didn't always take my camera, though, since I have done the rides so very often, there is little new to see. There were a couple of times that I did take pictures, however, and those days are detailed below.

As far as the rest of my day is concerned, when I am down here I usually spend some time checking email and stuff like that, working on this photo album (during this trip I was working on the pictures we took on our Colorado trip earlier in the month), visiting Ron and Jay or Ty and Scott, going out to play pool or just futzing around the condo. It is always relaxing to be down here, and I rarely have a specific agenda.

An Afternoon Bike Ride (July 26th)

On Thursday, I left the condo just after lunch to ride up to Hillsboro Inlet and back. The ride took about two hours. I've taken pictures of the route up north of Fort Lauderdale beach before, and you may have seen them on earlier album pages. But I have made something of a habit of taking some pictures down at Fort Lauderdale beach to record the progress of three construction projects that have been going on for some time.

The first is a new pedestrian overpass that has been built to connect a new condo/hotel next to Beach Place with the beach itself (presumably so folks don't have to jaywalk across A1A, something that isn't really that difficult anyway). They've completed the elevator tower on the beach side and have the frame and support structure completed over the roadway.

The second project I have been tracking is the construction of the new W Fort Lauderdale- a hotel/condo building that is going up on an entire block just north of the Sheraton Yankee Trader.

The third project is the new Trump Fort Lauderdale, which I think is going to be entirely condominiums. I don't think Trump has assigned one of his "apprentices" to oversee this particular project, which is taking up most of a block just north of the W Fort Lauderdale.

I continued my ride up to Hillsboro Inlet, relaxed at the inlet park there for a while, and then came back down into town. If I recall correctly, this was the evening that Ty and Scott had me over for dinner.

An Afternoon Bike Ride (July 28th)

It's Saturday, and I've slept in, having been out late last night enjoying some success on the pool tables at Bill's Filling Station and The Alibi. I am going to Ron and Jay's for dinner, and so am only taking a short ride up to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea this afternoon.

Saturday is usually a busy day at the Fort Lauderdale beach, and today was certainly no exception. The weather was great, although it was quite hot. That didn't keep the tourists away though, and the beach was crowded. While I was stopped on my bike, I also took a movie to record the Fort Lauderdale beach scene this afternoon, and you can watch that movie with the player at left.

The rest of my trip this week was pretty uneventful, although it did include a visit to Catfish Dewey's on Monday for their "All-You-Can-Eat Shrimp Night" and a refreshing frozen drink most other nights until I returned to Dallas on Wednesday, August 1st.
