A Visit to Ruckman Haus in San Antonio

Today, Sunday, Fred and I drove down to San Antonio to spend a few days with Ron and Prudence. Prudence is just coming off another surgery on her ankle. You may recall that she fell down her back stairs some months ago, and had to have some pins put in her ankle bones to hold them together. Well, the ankle had not healed well, and she was still having some pain, so she went to a different surgeon who pointed out how the first surgery had not been done as well as it could have, and that if she did not have it repaired she couldn't expect the pain to subside.

So two days ago, she had the ankle redone, and we wanted to come down to visit and see how she was doing. There were two other purposes for the trip. One was that the day before her surgery, Prudence had bought a number of plants for her east garden, as well as some statuary, and Fred could plant everything for her. The other thing she needed was a laptop computer that would enable her to access the Internet from her new apartment to do her bookings and email, and she also needed the ability to print stuff remotely in her kitchen. That task would be my responsibility, and early this past week I picked up a good laptop for her at Best Buy and loaded it with a bunch of software.

So, today we drove down to San Antonio, enjoying the ride that we have not done for some years, since we usually fly. This time, we didn't have much notice, so driving was much better financially (although Prudence graciously offered to pay for our tickets if we didn't want to drive).

Fred Fixes Up Prudence's East Garden

Fred spent most of Monday getting Prudence's east garden into shape. His first task was to arrange the statuary and plants into a pleasing arrangement, and test the view of the statuary from Prudence's dining room. I have put thumbnails for three of the pictures Fred took of this process below; click on them to view the full-size images:

Towards the end of the day, after he had finished planting everything and getting it all arranged, he took a bunch of pictures so that Prudence (from her semi-permanent position on the couch in their new apartment) could see what everything looked like. I have put thumbnails for four of these pictures below; to see the full-size images of Prudence's newly-planted east gardenk, just click on those thumbnails:

I Help Prudence with Her New Laptop

The other reason for coming down was so that I could get Prudence's new laptop set up and interfacing with her home network. That task turned out to be pretty easy, technically. The laptop recognized the network with no problem, but I had to do some tweaking to get her to be able to print from her laptop to the printer in the kitchen. But it all got set up, and I spent a fair amount of time working with Prudence to make sure she understood how to check her email yet leave it on the server to be downloaded to her main computer in the kitchen.

Prudence and Ron have moved into their new apartment, although there is still much to be done to get everything set up. This will take some time, particularly since Prudence is laid up, but things are progressing. Fred took a few pictures inside the new apartment, and I have put thumbnails for them below. You can look at the full-size images by clicking on those thumbnails.

We had a really good visit with Ron and Prudence, but on Wednesday afternoon we headed out for home.
