An Evening at the Symphony

Fred and I have had season tickets to the Dallas Symphony for over fifteen years now. I had tried to get season tickets back in 1997, but the Symphony was fully subscribed, and I had a lot of difficulty. In 1999, our friend Ron Drew, who at the time worked in public affairs at GTE, one of the Symphony's most important corporate sponsors, used his influence to get us to the top of the waiting list, and we got our first season tickets for the 1999-2000 season.

We initially got seats just for ourselves, but after a couple of years we upped the subscription to four seats, and we began taking two of our friends to each performance. We continued this practice up through the 2014-2015 Season. During that season, it began to get harder to find people who wanted to go with us. Some friends were often busy, some had moved out of our lives and some just didn't care for the Symphony. We again got 4 seats for the 2015-2016 Season, but this will be the last year we do so. Next season, we will have just 2 subscription seats for each of 8 concerts; when we find someone who wants to go, we'll just move seats from one performance to another one in our program. Perhaps it will be easier to get people to go if we only have to do it four times a year instead of eight.

On this particular evening, we have asked our friends Lynne and Lou to accompany us. We weren't able to see Lynne on Thanksgiving, although Lou came by for dessert at the end of the day, so we thought this would be a good kickoff for the holiday season.

It is always a treat to have Lynne along, and we would do so more often, but with her contacts in the arts community she almost always has tickets to just about everything. In fact, she often calls us when she has tickets for one thing or another that she can't use.

If memory serves, this particular evening was a holiday tradition- The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky along with two more modern pieces. This evening, we took a few candid pictures during Intermission. While Lynne and Lou were having coffee and pastry, Fred and I took pictures of each other, and prevailed on another concertgoer to take a picture of the two of us. Here are those photographs:

When we attend the Symphony, we usually stand on the second level lobby bridge from where we can do some people-watching. This evening, however, we were down on the main floor of the lobby with Lynne and Lou. But before we went back into the hall after intermission, Fred borrowed my phone and took a picture looking up at the second-level bridge.

We had a good time this day after Thanksgiving, and returned Lynne to the home where she was pet-sitting about ten-fifteen. Then Lou, Fred and I had supper at Wang's Chinese Restaurant in Preston Hollow.
