Our Florida Trip:
At the Beach

Of course, no trip to Fort Lauderdale (or anywhere else in Florida, for that matter) would be complete without a trip to whatever beach is nearby. We are fortunate in Fort Lauderdale that we have one of Florida's nicest beaches, and it is always a pleasure to bike or ride over there and spend some time. On this page, I'll put the pictures of the beach that we took on our various trips over here during our stay.

A Walk on the Beach

Most days, when we go to the beach, we bike over and ride up and down A1A. But when we want to go in the water or walk along the sand, we drive over to the beach and park on Sebastian Street. Then we either just walk along the sand near the shore, or lay out in the sun and I try to teach Fred backgammon or we just read. Today we just walked along through the sand, and Fred took some pictures that you can see if you click on the thumbnails below:

At the Beach With Brent Whitley

Some years ago, as you will already have learned from the photo album (assuming I have worked my way back to the late 1990s), we met Dr. Brent Whitley on a trip down to Fort Lauderdale. He became quite a good friend of ours, and even came to Dallas occasionally, where he also became quite close with our friend Mike Racke- before Mike's death in the motorcycle accident on the morning of September 11, 2001.

On one afternoon of our trip here, we made plans to meet Brent at the beach, which we did. In between dips in the ocean, I worked on teaching Fred backgammon, we chatted with Brent, and the three of us went over to Hooters for some lunch. (Hooters is located on the second floor of Beach Place, right across A1A, and affords good views up and down the beach. Below are thumbnails for some of the pictures we took today; click on them to view:

Fred also took a few short movies while we were at the beach. He is not the most loquacious narrator in the world, but the movies should give you an idea of what being at the Fort Lauderdale beach is like. Just use the players below to watch these movies:

A Cloudy Beach Day

While the weather in Fort Lauderdale is generally sunny, there are days of rain or overcast or just lots of clouds. On these days, of course, not many people are at the beach, and it has a wholly different appearance. On one of the days this week, we had such weather, and Fred and I walked over to the beach along Las Olas to see what it looked like on an "off" day. If you will click on the thumbnail images below, you can see some pictures of the walk along Las Olas and the beach on a cloudy day.

You can use the links below to continue to the album page for different day.
