Frank and Joe Perform in Austin

One of the things that Fred and I like to do whenever we get the chance is to watch and listen to Frank Roberts and Joe Wells doing their co-performance of singing and cowboy poetry. We have seen them over in Fort Worth at the Stock Show, and we have seen them in San Antonio at the Folk Life Festival at the Institute of Texas Cultures. We even saw them a while back just east of Austin in McKinney State Park.

The place where they were performing was somewhat south of Austin and west of I-35 near New Braunfels. The occasion was a Saturday gathering of some folks who were putting on exhibits of authentic Texas life from the late 1800s; if I recall correctly, it was sponsored by the Texas State Parks System.

One of the features of the gathering was a performance stage, where Frank, Joe and Linda Hamilton (who does cowgirl poetry) put on their show, and where other performers also displayed their talents. During the performance by Frank, Joe and Linda, we took a number of pictures, and I've put thumbnails for them at left. Just click on the thumbnails to view the full-size pictures.

We also took pictures of some of the other performers and some of the exhibits, and if you will click on the thumbnails below you can see those pictures:

One unexpected bonus of coming here this afternoon was that we got to see Don Davidson again. Don and his partner, Tony, used to live over in Bartlett, Texas. It was to their house that Frank and Joe brought Chip and Dale as kittens so that I could take them home to Dallas.

We spent the night in Austin in the same hotel that Frank and Joe were staying in, and the next day we bummed around town before they had to return to Leakey. Before Fred and I returned to Dallas, we went out to an area near where Greg lives to do a bit of walking on a couple of trails. West Austin is interesting in that there are lots of hills; the "Hill Country" really begins just west of the city. When I used to drive from the Data Junction offices out to Greg's house off Spicewood Springs Road, I would go through an area that was not developed; what non-flood area there was had already been occupied by small farms and ranches, and had never been changed into typical housing. So it was like driving through open country until you came out in the Spicewood Springs area.

I had noticed a couple of small parks and a trail or two, one of which led to a small dam and a couple of pools, and so Fred and I thought we'd walk the trail to see what it was like. We spent a pleasant hour or two doing that, and would have dropped in on Greg but he was out of town on business, and so when we were done hiking we just headed home to Dallas.
