Florida Trip Day 6
A Day at the Beach

Today's highlight was spending the afternoon at the beach. Sebastian Beach (the area of the oceanfront from Sebastian Street down about two blocks) is generally considered the "gay" part of Fort Lauderdale Beach. There are no signs and of course nothing written or specified anywhere, but this part of the beach, being between the two big concentrations of hotels and businesses, has always been the least busy, and I guess that is why gays seem to have taken it over. It has been the "gay" beach ever since I started coming here; I have no idea when it got started. So when Fred and I come to the beach, we come here; it's just friendlier. Here is a view looking south along A1A from Sebastian Beach.

In the summer and in high season (which starts next month) this area is a lot busier than it is now.

Today, we brought our beach chairs, towels, backgammon set and reading material, and we plan to stay at least a few hours. I am OK in the sun so long as I use a pretty good sunscreen, but still, having had melanoma last year, I still generally avoid noontime and mid-summer. But today, in October, the sun is much lower and the weather much cooler, so it is very pleasant. Here's a picture of Fred in his beach chair.

We spent the afternoon reading, looking at the "scenery," playing backgammon and just enjoying the mild weather. Sebastian Beach is also a convenient place to come because there is out-of-the-way parking nearby in the city lot, and it's only a dollar or two for the whole afternoon. When it came time to leave, we bundled up all our stuff and carried it across A1A. I went and got our rental car and came back to pick all of it, and Fred, up.
