November 23, 2008:
A Visit With Chris Young

Our friend, Chris Young, has had a difficult time this year battling cancer. You may have already seen pictures from our last visit to his house some time ago. But we have recently learned that his cancer, which had been in remission, has returned, and we have decided to drive up to his house this afternoon to talk with him and take him to dinner.

Ron Mathis, his former partner, will be driving, so I have ridden up to Plano to his house where Fred has driven down from Van Alstyne. (Fred has been at home this weekend getting packed for our trip to Europe that begins tomorrow evening).

Chris lives on the southeast side of Sherman, about fifteen miles north of where Fred lives, so all we had to do was drive up US 75 past Van Alstyne and turn off to the south side of Sherman.

From US-75, we turn off on FM 1417, turn left where that dead-ends into Route 11, and then turn right on East Lamar Street. From there it is just a mile or so to Chris's House.

Chris has a small, wood-frame house with a circular drive on the south side of Lamar Street. He has done quite a lot to fix it up in the couple of years he has been there, and he has also built a rental unit in back. We arrived there about three-thirty in the afternoon.

We had a good opportunity to learn more about what has happened with Chris's cancer, and he has told us what the treatment options are. He will be doing a round of chemotherapy starting in a week, and his doctor is hopeful that this will help. But Chris seems to understand that the chances are less good than they were the first time, now that the cancer has returned. We of course hope for the best for him.

About five, we headed out to take Chris to dinner. We ended up at El Chico's Mexican Cantina about three miles from his house. I think it was good for Chris to get out; he has been eating at home, but probably not eating enough, even though his sister, Tammy, watches out for him. Before we started eating, I got our waiter to take a picture of the five of us.

We had a pleasant dinner, and Chris's appetite seemed to be good. Then we headed back to Chris's house to sit and talk a while longer. While here, Jay took a picture of Ron, Chris, Fred and myself, and I took a picture of just Ron and Chris.

We left about seven; Ron dislikes driving in the dark. Chris's attitude seemed good, but we know that this latest setback has taken a lot out of him. We can only cross our fingers and hope for the best.

When we got back to Ron's house, he gave us a DVD that he made for Steve and Mario- the movie "Yentl," which they downloaded (as it is not available on commercial DVD). Just before Fred and I left, I took a couple more pictures of their three Russian Blue kittens. Here is one of the three kittens on the pool table and here is a picture of Jay and his kids.
